Born from a love of horses by two horsewomen, Stablemates Saddlery was opened by Gloria Reid and Helen Boyd in July of 1965 in the quaint little town of Mount Airy, Maryland. After a few years, Helen decided to leave the business to focus on her family, which made way for Gloria’s husband, Gene, a local barber and horseman, to join forces.  Gene would become quite the tack repair specialist. Unfortunately in 1975, Gene passed away, which opened a door for his son Mike, to join the family business with his mother. The two worked hand in hand for several decades growing the hobby store into one of Maryland’s premier tack shops. 

In the Early 2000’s Stablemates Saddlery was incorporated to become Stablemates Inc. Shortly after, Gloria retired from day to day operations and left the shop in Mike’s capable hands. In 2005, Mike’s son, Ryan joined the family business adding the third generation. After spending nearly a decade in the golf management industry as a Golf Course General Manager, Ryan brought a new outlook to the business from different parts of the Recreational and Professional sports industry.
